Italian cuisine is worldwide celebrated for its simplicity and burst of flavours. Amongst the few cuisines that have squeezed their way deep into our hearts, one is Italian cuisine. Be it pizza, pasta or lasagna, we cannot get enough of our Italian delicacies. But even though some have mastered the art of preparing pasta or pizza, there are not many risk-takers with lasagna.
Lasagna, with its layers of savoury goodness along with oozing gooey melted cheese, is a culinary masterpiece that has become widely popular. It’s a blissful amalgam of layers of pasta with rich meat sauce, and creamy bechamel. This iconic Italian dish is a crowdpleaser. Here we have brought simple steps to make a delicious homemade lasagna that will keep everyone coming back for seconds.

Cheesy Lasagna Recipe

Ingredients

For the Meat Sauce:

For the Béchamel Sauce:

1/4 cupAll-purpose flour
4 cupsWhole milk
1/4 tspGround nutmeg

Additional Ingredients:

9Medium-cooked lasagna noodles
3 cupsMozzarella cheese, shredded
1 cupParmesan cheese, grated
GarnishFresh basil or parsley (optional)

Method

  • In a big saucepan, fully cook the meat on medium-high heat. Now, add chopped onions and minced garlic to the pan and sauté until the onions caramelise. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and pepper.
  • Simmer the sauce on low heat for at least 30 minutes. Keep stirring occasionally.
  • Boil a large pot of salted water. Add the lasagna noodles. Boil it until medium cooked and drain the water. Lay the noodles on a clean surface to avoid sticking
  • In a saucepan, melt butter. Stir in the flour to create a smooth paste. Gradually whisk in the milk, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Cook the sauce, while whisking continuously, until it thickens. Remove from heat.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Take a large baking dish and spread a thin layer of meat sauce first. Place a layer of cooked lasagna noodles over the meat sauce. Spread a portion of the béchamel sauce over the noodles and top it with a layer of mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of cheese on top.
  • Cover the baking dish with aluminium foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes. Let the lasagna rest for 10-15 minutes before slicing.
  • Slice the lasagna into squares and serve hot. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley if desired. The layers of rich meat sauce, creamy béchamel, and gooey melted cheese create a very comforting and satisfying dish that's just perfect for your family dinners to gathering. Enjoy!
