Ingredients

QuantityIngredients
For the Meat Sauce
2 tbspOlive oil
1Onion, chopped
3 clovesGarlic, minced
1 poundGround meat
1 canTomatoes, crushed
1 canTomato sauce
2 tbspTomato paste
1 tspDried basil
1 tspDried oregano
To tasteSalt and pepper
For Cheese Mixture
1 1/2 cupRicotta cheese
1Egg, beaten
2 tbspFresh parsley, chopped
For Assembly
12Lasagna noodles
3 cupsMozzarella cheese, shredded
1 1/2 cupsParmesan cheese, grated
As neededFresh basil, chopped

Method

  • In a large pan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  • Add the ground meat to the pan and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon.
  • Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Let the sauce simmer on low heat for about 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Set aside.
  • Cook the noodles according to the package instructions, then drain and lay them flat on a sheet of parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  • In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese with the beaten egg and fresh parsley or basil. Stir until smooth and set aside.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a 9x13-inch baking dish, spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom.
  • Place 3–4 lasagna noodles over the sauce, slightly overlapping. Spread a third of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, then add a layer of meat sauce, followed by a layer of shredded mozzarella and a sprinkle of parmesan.
  • Repeat the layering process two more times (noodles, ricotta mixture, meat sauce, mozzarella, and parmesan).
  • For the final layer, add remaining noodles, and a generous amount of sauce, and top with mozzarella and parmesan.
  • Cover the baking dish with aluminium foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15–20 minutes.
  • For the best texture, let the lasagna rest for 10–15 minutes before cutting to allow the layers to set.
  • Garnish with fresh basil if desired and serve warm with a side of garlic bread and salad for a complete meal.
